Best Music Moments in Film – Part 3

To keep the music theme rolling, here are five more of my favourite movie music moments.

Jackie Brown (1997) – “Across 110th Street”

Tarantino is the master of using established songs in his films and this might be my favourite. No big moment, just a super cool ditty and a super cool way to open the movie.

Old School (2003) – “Total Eclipse of the Heart”

This one gets me every time. A wedding, slow-dancing and Bonnie Tyler then wham, cussing. I’m a simple man.

Once (2008) – “Falling Slowly”

A film that was beloved by the relative few who saw it at the time and has grown to be something of an underground classic, this beautifully realistic romance’s centrepiece scene is every bit as magnificent now as it was back then. And good on Jon Stewart for letting Marketa Irglova deliver her speech after winning Best Song at the Oscars.

12 Years a Slave (2012) – “Roll Jordan Roll”

As Solomon Northup finally gives in to his situation, the strain of years of cruelty and punishment are released through song. Chiwetel Ejiofor should have won an Oscar for this scene alone.

A Star is Born (2018) – “Shallow”

I’ve spoken about this one ad nauseam on this blog, so surely you didn’t think I’d leave it out here? Much like “Let It Go”, the over-saturation of the song has worked in its favour; as when it happens in the movie it’s still every bit as effective.

More to come.

  1. Roll Jordan Roll! Such a powerful moment. Chiwetel’s anguished face! I need to check out Once… I remember you liked that one very much.
